1996 was not only the year Efva Attling founded her jewellery brand; it was also the year one of her most iconic pieces was designed – the Homo Sapiens necklace. Thirty years later, its meaning remains just as relevant: “the thinking human”.

“I got a great idea. If I divide the word ‘Homo Sapiens’, which means the knowing man in Latin, and punches the words on the side of two silver tags, and then ties a black leather strap in the loop of the tag ... Naturally with a durable knot, ‘Half stroke around own part’. It would be a cool necklace with a strong message – that we all humans have the same value.” – Efva Attling

“I had been invited to a friend’s home to watch Johan Renck’s brand-new video for Madonna’s song Nothing Really Matters,” Efva begins. “Johan was flying to Los Angeles the following day for the MTV Awards to meet Madonna. I had just begun my new life as a jewellery designer and asked Johan if he would take a couple of my pieces to Madonna – the Homo Sapiens necklace and the Human ring.”
“A few months later Johan called and told me that she liked my jewellery and had worn it for a photoshoot. Of course I was thrilled. That summer I was standing in the kitchen at our summer house, flipping through the American fashion magazine W, and who is sitting on the lap of a young, handsome actor if not Madonna – wearing my Homo Sapiens around her neck. I noticed the necklace was hanging a little loose and that she had only tied it with a single knot – oh dear. The text said that Madonna had danced all evening.”
