WHAT IS 18K WHITE GOLD MADE OF?

Generally speaking, 18 karat white gold consist of 75% gold. The remaining amount is palladium and silver. The exact proportions vary slightly depending on the supplier.

At Efva Attling Stockholm we use an average of 14–16% palladium, a precious metal that hides the yellow tone of the gold. Then, among other things, a smaller proportion of silver and other metals are mixed in.

Rings in gold are plated with rhodium to bring out the beautiful, cold shade. Rhodium also helps protect the ring. Rhodium is not affected by oxidation. And your ring in 18k white gold, therefore, resists the oxygen in the air in a completely different way than silver rings.

HOW LONG HAVE WE BEEN USING WHITE GOLD?

In fact, the history of white gold begins with platinum in the early 20th century. The metal was popular with its silvery sheen, but as it was difficult to extract it also became very expensive.

Jewellers then began experimenting to find a more readily available and similar metal to make beautiful creations in. White gold later began to be used around the year 1920, as an alternative to platinum. Today, the ring in white gold has given a place in both the manufacture and purchase of rings.
